What is women’s health?

You’ll receive most of your women’s health services during a well-woman exam. These visits include a pelvic exam, which allows your practitioner to visually check your vaginal and cervical tissue for signs of abnormalities.

Pap smear testing is performed during many pelvic exams. This simple screening gathers a sample of cells from your cervix for microscopic evaluation. Pap smear testing is a powerful tool in screening for cervical cancer and allows for detection in the earliest possible stages.  

A professional breast exam is also part of well-women visits. Your doctor checks your breast tissue for lumps or other abnormal masses and teaches you how to perform your own exams at home.

What kinds of topics can I bring up during my well-woman exam?

You are encouraged to broach any reproductive or general health topic during your well-woman exams. The best way to make the most of these visits is to be as open and candid with your practitioner as possible.

How often do I need to come in for women’s health visits?

If you need treatment for a women’s health concern, you might need to come in more frequently until the matter is resolved. If your recent Pap smear screening did not yield abnormal results, you may not need a Pap smear during each visit. Your practitioner discusses your unique needs during your appointment.
